A Brief History of Oil Lamps
Before widespread rural electrification in the early 20th century, kerosene oil lamps were an essential household item, providing dependable light for kitchens, parlors, bedrooms, and front porches. Their soft, warm glow illuminated everything from evening meals and family gatherings to reading and sewing after sunset. Even after electric lighting became common, oil lamps remained practical emergency lighting and cherished family heirlooms.
By the late 1970s and 1980s, companies such as Lamplight Farms helped revive the popularity of oil lamps as decorative home accents. Inspired by America’s colonial and Victorian heritage, these lamps became staples in country farmhouse, Early American, and traditional decorating styles. Today, vintage Lamplight Farms lamps are appreciated for their nostalgic charm, quality American craftsmanship, and timeless appeal, making them both collectible and beautifully functional decorative pieces.
